Janet Sutherland was born about 1826 in Sutherlandshire, Scotland.
She married Neil Ross in 1854 and soon after they emigrated to Victoria, Australia.
They had three children in Victoria, two who died in infancy, before they sailed for Bluff in the 1867 on the Tararua.
The family settled in Invercargill and when Janet signed the suffrage petition they were living in Spey St.
Janet died at her home on 18 March 1914 and Neil died the following year, they are buried with their son in the Invercargill Eastern Cemetery.
