Janet Bain was born about 1844 in Scotland.

She had a son in 1874 before she married gardener Frederick Spears in Greenlaw, Berwickshire on 5 January 1874.

They moved to England where their next three children were born then, in 1880, the family boarded the Wellington bound for Otago.

They settled in Dunedin where their last two children were born and when Janet signed the suffrage petition they were living in Maori Hill.

Janet died at her home on 14 June 1900 and Frederick died in 1917 – they are buried together in the Northern Cemetery.
