Biography contributed by Katherine Blakeley.

Janet Fraser was born on 30 March 1861 in Roseneath, Dunbartonshire, Scotland – the daughter of John Fraser and Catherine McMillan.

She emigrated to Otago with her family in 1874 on the Invercargill and they lived at the Southern Reservoir where her father was the caretaker.

Janet married Francis Stent, a watchmaker, on 24 August 1882 in Dunedin and they had four children.

In 1889 Francis was declared bankrupt due to ill health.

When Janet signed the suffrage petition the family were living in Forth Street.

They later moved to Caversham where Janet died on 17 October 1941 and Frank died in 1945 – they are buried together in the Andersons Bay Cemetery.
