Janet Mundell was born on 2 October 1843 in Ayrshire, Scotland – the daughter of John Mundell and Jean Boyd.
She married Alexander Munro Thomson, a shepherd, in 1867 in Argyllshire and they had a daughter before they emigrated to New Zealand.
Alexander worked as a shepherd on Moeraki Station and they had a further five children before Alexander died in 1884.
When Janet signed the suffrage petition she was living in Hampden.
She died at her home on 31 October 1919 and is buried with Alexander in the Hampden Cemetery.
