Biography contributed by Katherine Blakeley
Janet King was born on 26 August 1854 in Muthill, Perthshire, Scotland – the daughter of James King and Janet Brydie.
She emigrated to New Zealand with her family in the late 1850s and they settled at Tomahawk on the Otago Peninsula.
Janet married William Weir, a farmer, on 21 June 1877 and they had six children.
When Janet signed the suffrage petition the family were living at Highcliff on the Peninsula.
Soon after this they bought a farm at Inch Clutha and moved there.
William died in 1930 at Stirling and Janet died on 12 August 1939 at her son’s home in Stirling.
They are buried together in the Balclutha Old Cemetery.
