Janet Marion Nicholson was born about 1847 in Liverpool, Lancashire – the daughter of David Nicholson, a rent agent, and Margaret Carruthers.
Her mother died in 1866 and her father in 1874 - later that year Janet, with four of her siblings, emigrated to Wellington on the Star of India and settled in Dunedin.
Janet married John Davey Lawrence, a grocer, on 8 June 1877 in Dunedin.
They had five children and when Janet signed the suffrage petition they were living in George St.
Janet died on 1 January 1916 and John died in 1923, they are buried in the family grave in the Andersons Bay Cemetery.
