Biography contributed by Katherine Blakeley.

Jeanie Bachop was born on 24 September 1860 in Muiravonside, Stirlingshire, Scotland – the daughter of James Bachop, a crofter, and Ann Cairns.

Her father died in 1875 and her mother died in 1881.

Shortly after Jeanie, accompanied by her two sisters and her brother emigrated to Otago on the “Westland” arriving in January 1882.

Jeanie married John Kaye, a clerk, on 9 September 1886 in Dunedin.

They had three children and when Jeanie signed the suffrage petition the family were living in Clyde Avenue, off St David St, in North Dunedin.

John died in 1925 and Jeanie died at her home on 2 July 1935 – they are buried in the family grave in the Andersons Bay Cemetery.
