Janet/Jeanie Menzies was born about 1832 in Perthshire, Scotland – the daughter of Robert Menzies and Elizabeth McGregor.
She married James Marshall on 4 June 1857 and they had two sons before they boarded the Henrietta bound for Otago.
They lived in Dunedin for a year, where their youngest son died, before going to the Gabriel’s Gully goldfields.
They eventually settled in South Otago and had nine further children.
In 1877 they moved to Chatton, north of Gore and started farming at 'Stratha' where they remained for 37 years.
Jeanie signed the suffrage petition in, nearby Knapdale.
In 1907 they celebrated their Golden Wedding anniversary with a gathering of friends and family.
Jeanie died at her home on 20 August 1910 – her obituary said she 'was one of the pioneer settlers of the district, and was of a very genial and hospitable nature'.
James died in 1920 – they are buried together in the Gore Cemetery.
