Jemima Grace McLaren was born on 16 August 1864 in Tannadice, Angus, Scotland – the daughter of James McLaren, a shepherd, and Jane McDonald. (See 98 Jane McLaren)
She emigrated to Otago with her family in 1874 on the Tweed and they settled in Kirkland Hill, Dunedin.
Jemima married William Henry Sunderland, a fisherman, in 1890 and they had six children.
Their first child was born in Victoria, Australia and the remainder in New Zealand.
When Jemima signed the suffrage petition the family were living in Kirkland Hill near her parents.
They later moved to Port Chalmers where Jemima died on 2 November 1932 and William died in 1944.
They are buried in the family grave in the Port Chalmers Cemetery.
