Biography contributed by Katherine Blakeley

Jessie Brown was born in 1867 in New Zealand – the daughter of Gilbert Brown, a farmer, and Helen Logan.

She married cabinet maker John Adamson Dewar in 1887 and they had seven children.

When Jessie signed the suffrage petition the family were living in East Gore.

In 1912 they moved to Timaru where they took over Werry’s Hotel.

They celebrated their golden wedding anniversary in 1937.

John died in 1943 and Jessie died on 18 September 1957 – they are buried together in the Timaru Cemetery.
