Jessie Duncan Dunbar was born on January 25th 1863 in Lethnot and Navar, Angus, Scotland, the daughter of James Dunbar, a ploughman, and Jessie Duncan.
Jessie emigrated to Otago with her family in 1874 on the Jessie Readman and they settled in Waikouaiti, north of Dunedin.
Her father died in 1883. And when Jessie signed the suffrage petition she was living with her family in Waikouaiti working as a dressmaker.
She did not marry and she died in Dunedin on August 29th 1948.
She is buried in the family grave in the Waikouaiti Cemetery.
