Biography contributed by Katherine Blakeley

Jessie Himmel was born in 1869 in New Zealand – the daughter of Ferdinand Himmel, a clockmaker and mender of musical instruments, and Mary Galloway.

When she signed the suffrage petition Jessie was living with her family in Cumberland St, Dunedin, working as a dressmaker.

She married Morris John Pierce, a printer, in 1901. They had two daughters and lived in St Kilda, Dunedin.

Morris died in 1929 and Jessie died on 1 October 1943. They were both cremated.
