Janet McLean, known as Jessie, was born on the Isle of Bute, Argyll, Scotland in 1859. She married John Mangan in Invercargill, a canvasser, in 1875 at the age of 16. They had eight children. Jessie died in Invercargill in 1927 at the age of 68.
