Biography contributed by Katherine Blakeley

Jessie Christie was born in Scotland about 1857 – the daughter of William Christie, a blacksmith, and Mary.

She emigrated with her parents on the Nourmahal, arriving in Dunedin in 1858.

The family lived, at first, in Dunedin where they ran the Caledonian Hotel then about 1869 they moved to Keithmore Farm near Warepa in South Otago. Jessie married there on 24 June 1881. Her husband John McFarlane was a sawmiller, they had four children and when Jessie signed the suffrage petition they were living in Tapanui.

Jessie and John celebrated their Silver Wedding anniversary in 1906 with a large family gathering and an evening of dancing.

John died suddenly in 1909 and Jessie died in Dunedin on 4 August 1921. They are buried together in the Tapanui Cemetery.
