Jessie Paterson Gelbie Scott was born in New Zealand in 1861- the daughter of William Jamieson and Isabella Cruickshank.
Her father died in 1864 and the following year her mother married James Scott, a carrier.
Jessie was unable to walk from about the age of six and when she signed the suffrage petition she was living in Frederick St, Dunedin.
She married James William Charles Bateman, a carpenter, in 1897 and they had six children, one who died in infancy.
The family lived in Levin, Dunedin, Rangataua and Stratford before settling in Dannevirke in the 1920s.
Jessie died in Dannevirke on 23 August 1940, she is buried in the Mangatera Cemetery, Dannevirke.
The funeral was held after a meeting at the Salvation Army Citadel, the Dannevirke Municipal Band assisted the local Salvation Army Band with the singing at the graveside.
Jessie’s obituary says 'notwithstanding her disability, she was always cheerful, uncomplaining, and thankful for the blessings bestowed on her, and appreciative of any little kindness shown her. She had been a member of the Salvation Army for 45 years, taking an active part both in the open-air and inside services as long as she was able to do so. She was also a valued member of the Home League, in which she held office for many years. She had a fine Christian character and was loved by all who knew her.'
Charles re-married in 1943 and he died in 1950.
