Jessie McFarland was born about 1850 in Renfrewshire, Scotland – the daughter of John McFarlane, a calico printer, and Janet.

She emigrated to Otago in 1862 with her family on the Aboukir and she married Dr Peter Stewart on 2 April 1884 at her father’s home in Dunedin.

They had three sons and lived in Milton where Jessie signed the suffrage petition.

Peter died at their home in 1902 and Jessie died on 15 December 1924 at her brother’s home in Dunedin, they are buried together in the Fairfax Cemetery, Milton.
