Joan Fyfe Dunbar was born on August 6th 1869 in Lethnot and Navar, Angus, Scotland, the daughter of James Dunbar, a ploughman, and Jessie Duncan.
Joan emigrated to Otago with her family in 1874 on the Jessie Readman and they settled in Waikouaiti, north of Dunedin.
Her father died in 1883. When Joan signed the suffrage petition she was living with her family in Waikouaiti.
She did not marry and she died in Dunedin on September 4th 1946.
She is buried in the family grave in the Waikouaiti Cemetery.
