Joan Hourston was born about 1852 in Westray, Orkney, Scotland, the daughter of John Hourston, a farmer, and Margaret Logie.

She married Thomas Hourston on July 26th 1872 in Westray, and later that year they emigrated to Otago on the Helen Burns.

They had seven children and lived in Waikouaiti where Thomas worked as a contractor and Joan signed the suffrage petition.

Thomas died at their home in 1914, and Joan died on January 5th 1925 at her son’s home at Te Houka in South Otago.

They are buried in the family grave in the Waikouaiti Cemetery.
