Biography contributed by Katherine Blakeley

Joanna Cleland Crawford was born on 20 February 1851 in Glasgow, Scotland – the daughter of John Crawford, a corn factor, and Margaret Helen Craig.

She emigrated to Otago and she married Henry Stuart McColl, a labourer and sawmiller, on 26 December 1878 in Dunedin.

They had eight children and when Joanna signed the suffrage petition the family were living in Glenomaru in South Otago.

Henry died at their home 'Hopehill' in 1900 and Joanna re-married in 1904 to Isaac Smith, also a sawmiller.

Joanna died at 'Hopehill' on 20 December 1928 and Isaac died in 1939, they are buried with Henry in the family grave in the Romahapa Cemetery.
