Biography contributed by Helen Edwards.

Jobina Gilbert was born in Coatbridge, Old Monkland, Scotland, on 17 May 1853. Her parents were Helen Rule Robertson and Henry Gilbert. She left Glasgow in 1879 aboard the Taranaki, bound for Port Chalmers with her mother and four siblings. The passenger list describes her as a housemaid. She was the sister of Alexander Gilbert, who married Helen Ball, and lived at the same Church Street (now Nairn Street) address. Helen signed Sheet 125, and Jobina’s name is separated from hers by one signature. In 1896 Jobina was a machinist, probably at the Roslyn Woollen Mill. By 1911, she had moved to School Street. She died at the Little Sisters of the Poor in 1926, aged 72, and is buried in Dunedin’s Southern Cemetery.
