Johanne Marie Anderson was born about 1844 in Denmark, she emigrated to New Zealand about 1873 and married Isaac Peterson on 2 November 1874 in Otago.
They had a son in 1876 and Isaac died in July of that year at Blueskin, north of Dunedin. He is buried in the Northern Cemetery.
Johanne then married Godfried/Godfrey Martinus Mathieson, a seaman, later that year on 5 December. They had two children and lived in Invercargill before moving to Dunedin about 1887. The family lived at Woodhaugh in the Leith Valley where Johanne signed the suffrage petition.
Godfred died in the Dunedin Hospital in 1903, he is buried in the Northern Cemetery.
In 1907 Johanne applied for 'letters of naturalisation' her application was approved and she was said 'to be of good character.'
Johanne died in the Benevolent Institution on 29 March 1929, she is buried in the Andersons Bay Cemetery.
