Julia Emma McAlpine was born to George and Isabella in 1859 in Mahurangi, Auckland. In 1880 at the age of 21 she married John Chicken, a colour-sergeant in the Napier Rifles who eventually rose to the rank of Major.
Julia and John had two daughters and one son.
Julia lived on Thackeray St in Napier, and in the 1910s she and John moved to Wairoa briefly. Julia was widowed in 1939, and died in 1941.
