Julia Mary McGuirk was born about 1854 in County Meath, Ireland.
She married George Scott, a ploughman, in Brechin, Scotland in 1878.
They emigrated to Otago the following year on the Timaru and had seven children, two who died in infancy.
When Julia signed the suffrage petition the family were living at Clarkesville and George was working as a blacksmith.
They later moved to Milton where George died in 1919.
Julia died in Dunedin on 3 March 1920, she is buried with George in the family grave in the Southern Cemetery, Dunedin.
