Catherine/Kate Prentice was born about 1851 in Scotland. She married Alexander Black, an engineer, in 1875 in New Zealand.

They had 10 children and lived in Maitland St, Dunedin, before shifting to Clyde St and then to St Clair.

Alexander was a partner and managing director of Cossens & Black, an engineering and motor sales business.

Alexander died in 1926 and Catherine died on 7 April 1929.They are buried in the family grave in the Southern Cemetery.
