Biography contributed by Katherine Blakeley

Catherine/Kate Astley was born in 1865 in Lancashire, England – the daughter of Elijah Astley, a currier, and Cicely Whittle.

She emigrated to New Zealand with her family in 1879 on the Western Monarch and the family settled in Mt Albert.

Kate’s father was prominent in the Mt Albert Methodist Church and when Kate signed the suffrage petition she was living in Melville St, Dunedin - signing next to her was Minnie Warnes (See 63 Minnie Warnes), a Salvation Army Officer.

Kate was also a  Salvation Army Officer – in 1896 'Captain Kate Astley, who had been for some time in charge of the Ashburton contingent of the Salvation Army, has been transferred to Timaru'. In 1899 she was assisting with meetings in South Dunedin.

She married James McMurtrie, a potter, in 1908 and they lived in Drury near Auckland.

James died in 1923 and Kate died on 23 June 1948, she is buried in the Hillsborough Cemetery, Auckland.
