Biography contributed by Katherine Blakeley

Kate Coxhead was born in London, England in 1856 – the daughter of Frederick Coxhead, a licenced victualler, and Mercy Perkins.

She came to New Zealand with her parents and five siblings in 1858 on the Palmyra. The family settled in Dunedin.

Kate’s father died in 1868 and she married John Connell Cameron, a commercial traveller, on 5 May 1880 at St Paul’s, Dunedin. They had eight children and, when she signed the suffrage petition, the family were living in Castle St.

Kate died on 17 August 1908 and John died in 1927. They are buried in the family grave in the Northern Cemetery.
