Biography contributed by Katherine Blakeley.
Catherine (Kate) Cleaver was born in 1871 in New Zealand, the daughter of George Cleaver, a brickmaker, and Mary Ann Perry.
Her father deserted the family in 1882. Over the next few years four of her brothers and two of her sisters were sent to the Caversham Industrial School.
When Kate signed the suffrage petition she was living with her mother and siblings in Filleul St, Dunedin working as a tailoress.
She was still in Filleul St in 1896. After this she disappears from the records and may have either married or changed her name.
