Biography contributed by Katherine Blakeley

Kate/Catherine Connaughton was born about 1845 in County Westmeath, Ireland.

She emigrated to New Zealand in the mid 1870s and she married John Gaffey, a platelayer also from Westmeath, on 18 June 1879 at St Joseph’s Church in Dunedin.

They appear to have had a son before their marriage and they had a further four children in the following years before John died in 1886.

Catherine advertised for boarders to supplement her income and when she signed the suffrage petition she was living in Grosvenor St, Kensington.

She died at her home on 28 February 1939 and is buried with John in the Southern Cemetery.
