Biography contributed by Katherine Blakeley

Catherine/Kate McCalman was born on 14 July 1867 in Kilmonivaig, Invernesshire, Scotland – the daughter of Donald McCalman, a salmon fisher, and Isabella Calder. (See 137 I McCalman) She emigrated to Otago with her family in 1874 on the “Nelson” and they settled at Tahatika in the Owaka Valley where they had a farm and where Catherine signed the suffrage petition. Catherine did not  marry, she died at her home 'Winterdyne', Tahatika on 26 August 1940 and she is buried with her parents in the Purekireki Cemetery.

Her obituary said she 'was an ardent supporter of every good cause and a very staunch member of the Baptist Church'.
