Catherine/Kate Sutherland was born in South Otago in 1870 – the daughter of Adam Sutherland, a shepherd, and Elspeth Lamond. (See 106 Elspeth Sutherland)
When Kate signed the suffrage petition she was living with her widowed mother and brother in Waitepeka.
She married John Hampden Erskine, a farmer, on 29 August 1893 at Chalmers Church in Dunedin.
They had five children and lived in the Wairarapa and Pahiatua where Kate died on 26 September 1950 and John died in 1954.
They are buried together in the Mangatera Dannevirke Cemetery.
