Biography contributed by Katherine Blakeley

Alice Laura Chapman was born in 1859 in Brighton, Sussex – the daughter of Thomas Chapman and Ann Dorey.

She emigrated to Canterbury with her family in 1868 on the Gainsborough and they settled in Dunedin.

Alice married Peter Adamson, a cabinetmaker, at her home on 26 December 1882.

They had eight children and when Alice signed the suffrage petition the family were living in Forth Place, now Warrender Street.

Later in life they moved to Wellington where Peter died in 1927 – he is buried in the Karori Cemetery.

Alice died at her daughter’s home in Dunedin on 27 May 1947 – she is buried in the Andersons Bay Cemetery.
