Biographical information provided by Stefanie Lash, Archives New Zealand, for the He Tohu exhibition:

Lilian Maude Box was born in Headington, Oxfordshire in 1871, and emigrated with her parents William and Alice. Her younger siblings were born in Christchurch.

Lilian signed the Women’s Suffrage Petition with her mother Alice. At the time they were living on Stanmore Rd in Richmond, Christchurch. Her father was a draper, and his son Edward served as his apprentice.

Lilian never married, and lived with her brother Ihenga, a carpenter, and on-and-off with their other siblings. They moved around Christchurch fairly often, living in Sumner, Redcliffs, Merivale and Lyttelton. For a time they moved to Temuka in central Canterbury, but when Lilian died in 1941, she was back in Christchurch.
