Biography contributed by Katherine Blakeley

Lucy Alice Newham was born in Hull, Yorkshire, England in 1847 – the daughter of Thomas Newham, a commercial agent in seed, and Mary Collingwood.

She emigrated to Victoria, Australia with her family in 1859 on the Champion of the Seas.

The family settled in Richmond, Melbourne where Lucy married Robert William Tully Harding, an engineer, on 7 May 1870.

Lucy and Robert had two sons who both died in infancy before moving to New Zealand about 1873.

A further nine children were born to the couple and when Lucy signed the suffrage petition they were living in North Taieri Rd, Dunedin.

Robert died in Dunedin in 1904 and Lucy died on 18 January 1927 in Napier. They are buried in the family grave in the Northern Cemetery, Dunedin.
