Biography contributed by Bernadette Siebert
Elizabeth Jane Brighouse (known as Lizzie) was born in 1865 in Auckland, the second daughter of Thomas and Sarah nee Ward. Thomas and Sarah were from Derbyshire, England and had arrived in 1859. By the time Lizzie was 10 years old, the family was living in Kaeo, Northland where Thomas was a farmer.
When Lizzie signed the petition she was living in Kaeo with her parents. Lizzie’s sister Harriet married in 1893 to William Bobbett, a man 30 years her senior. Harriet died in Thames in February 1898 and William after an operation at Auckland Hospital, five weeks later, leaving three children including a two month old. Lizzie took the children back to Kaeo and looked after them.
When Lizzie’s mother died in 1918, she left all real and personal property worth 350 pounds to daughter Elizabeth Jane and monies in the bank, presumably to help Lizzie take care of her nieces and nephew.
Lizzie died 7 July 1930 aged 65 and was buried in the Kaeo Cemetery Kaeo, Northland, near her parents. She died intestate, but her brother filed an affidavit stating her house and house and section was worth 115 pounds.
Lizzie is the daughter of #375 Sarah BRIGHOUSE Kaeo and sister-in-law of #375 Elizabeth HARE
