Biography contributed by Katherine Blakeley

Lizzie was born in 1870 in New Zealand, the daughter of Timothy Keates and Elizabeth Willis.

When she signed the suffrage petition, Lizzie was living with her family in Kent House, Hanover St, Dunedin, helping with her mother’s dressmaking business. Her mother Elizabeth Keates also signed the petition.

Lizzie married William Patrick Jewett, a bootmaker, on 15 October 1901 at her sister’s house in Cumberland St, Dunedin.

They had two sons and lived, at first, in Dunedin, later moving to Palmerston North.

William died in March 1949 and Lizzie died at Palmerston North on 28 September 1949. They are buried together in the Kelvin Grove Cemetery, Palmerston North.
