Biography contributed by Katherine Blakeley.

Eliza Jane/Lizzie Barry was born about 1864 in County Limerick, Ireland – the daughter of John Barry.

She emigrated to Canterbury in 1887 on the “Ruapehu” and she married sailor Andrew Phelan on 4 November 1891 at St Joseph’s Cathedral, Dunedin.

When Lizzie signed the suffrage petition they were living in Russell Street.

They had two children and, in 1898, Andrew was appointed as a police gaoler in Nelson. He died in Nelson in 1900 and is buried in the Wakapuaka Cemetery.

Lizzie re-married in 1913 to farmer Thomas Edward Hayr, a widower with two children. They lived in Mt Roskill, Auckland.

Thomas died in 1918 – he is buried with his first wife in the Waikaraka Cemetery.

Lizzie died at her home on 28 November 1943 – she is buried with her two children, also in the Waikaraka Cemetery.
