Biography contributed by Katherine Blakeley

Anne Loring was born on 5 July 1843 in Hobart, Tasmania – the daughter of Samuel Loring, a butcher, and Jane Daniels.

She was one of 10 children, six who died in infancy. In 1859 the family left Tasmania for Oil Tree Station near the Murray River.

Her mother died there in 1862 after which Anne came to New Zealand with her father.

They lived in Nelson for a time before moving to Dunedin where Anne signed the suffrage petition and where her father died in 1895.

Anne later moved to Auckland where she celebrated her 90th birthday in 1933 with a morning tea party at St Luke’s Vicarage in Mount Albert.

After she had cut the cake a speech was made that said 'she had been a most keen church worker and her whole life had been a constant inspiration to all who came in contact with her.' Ten years later Anne, who was now a resident of Dunholme Convalescent Hospital, celebrated her 100th birthday.

She died on 25 October 1943 and was cremated at Waikumete Cemetery.

Her obituary said 'over a long period she was a member of Epiphany Church, and took a particular interest in the work of the Melanesian Mission.'
