Biography contributed by Katherine Blakeley
Louisa Webb was born about 1852 in Hampshire, England. She married Charles William Hawkins, a naturalist and chemist, in 1870 and they had two children before they emigrated to New Zealand about 1876.
They settled in Dunedin and had a further six children, one who died in infancy.
Charles was declared bankrupt in 1884 and the following year Louisa was advertising in the paper her “Curative Drops cure all Female Irregulations. Hawkin’s Herbal Depot”.
When Louisa signed the suffrage petition the family were living in George Street and she was still working as a herbalist.
She died on 12 March 1926 and Charles died later that year in July – they are buried in the family grave in the Northern Cemetery.
