Biographical information provided by Katherine C’Ailceta, Archives New Zealand, for the He Tohu exhibition:

Louisa Mary Rhodes was born Louisa Mary Stephenson in Hull, Yorkshire East Riding, England in October 1851. The daughter of Henry Acey Stephenson and Ann Stephenson, she married George Rhodes on 2 March 1876 in Sydney.  The couple then moved to Mount Albert, Auckland, and named their house ‘Rhodesia’. They went on to have eight children, one of whom, Leonard Edgar Rhodes, was Mayor of Mount Albert from 1923-1931. Louisa was an active worker in the Auckland Society of the New Church. She passed away 14 June 1929 in Auckland, a short time after her and George’s golden wedding anniversary.
