Sarah Lucy Woolley was born in 1848 in Leicester, England – the daughter of Samuel Woolley and Maria Lacey.
Lucy emigrated to New Zealand with her family when she was a few months old on the Ajax and they settled in Waikouaiti north of Dunedin.
She married Charles Haynes, a widower with several children, in May 1888. 'The town of Palmerston was en fete yesterday, the occasion being the celebration of the marriage of Miss Woolley to Mr Charles Haynes...After the wedding breakfast was partaken of, the newly married couple left per train for Christchurch, en route for Melbourne to spend their honeymoon.'
Lucy and Charles had two children, one who died in infancy, and when Lucy signed the suffrage petition they were living in Dundas St, Dunedin.
Charles died at their home in 1901, he is buried in the Palmerston Cemetery with his first wife, and some of his children.
Lucy died on 16 October 1928, she is buried in the Waikouaiti Cemetery with the Woolley family and her son.
