Biographical information provided by Briar Barry for the He Tohu exhibition:

Mary Alice Fletcher was born in 1863. She married John Murgatroyd, a wool merchant, in Kent, England in 1888. The couple immigrated to New Zealand in 1889 with their six children. A final child was born in New Zealand.  At least one of her sons, Hugo Lester Murgatroyd, served and died in the First World War (he was in the Leicestershire Regiment).  Mary died in 1940 and is buried in Culverden Cemetery in Canterbury.
