Matilda Pattinson was born about 1824 in Sheerness, Kent.

She married carpenter John Anderson in 1851 in London and, in 1853 they emigrated to Victoria, Australia.

Their son George was born in 1860 and not long after John left to join the gold rush at Gabriel’s Gully.

Matilda followed with George in 1862 and they settled in Lawrence where John died in 1873 – he is buried in the Lawrence Cemetery.

When Matilda signed the suffrage petition she was living with her son & his wife (See 83 Mrs Anderson) in St David St, Dunedin.

In 1900 George purchased an interest in the “Mataura Ensign” in Gore and the family moved there.

Matilda died on 27 December 1901 in Gore – she is buried in the Gore Cemetery.
