Margaret Alice Whalan was born in 1861 in Otago – the daughter of Patrick Peter Whalan, a farmer, and Mary Ellen McDonald.

She married Stephen Barber on 19 July 1888 at her mother’s home at Taieri Beach, south of Dunedin.

They had six children and when Margaret signed the suffrage petition the family were living in Clark St, Caversham, Dunedin and Stephen was working as a stevedore.

Two of their sons died in World War 1.

Stephen died in 1939 and Margaret died on 4 April 1943, they are buried together in the Andersons Bay Cemetery.
