Martha Lane Fredric was born on 27 March 1850 in Hobart, Tasmania. She was the daughter of Richard Augustus Fredric, a tailor, and Ellen Money Hall.
Martha had a daughter on 3 June 1871 and she married John Buchanan, a shoemaker, a few weeks later on 29 June in Hobart.
They moved to New Zealand where their daughter Alice was born in 1875.
When Martha signed the suffrage petition they were living in George St, Dunedin and Martha was working as a fruiterer.
John died at their home in 1904 and Martha died at her daughter’s home in Dunedin on 21 June 1923. They are buried together in the Northern Cemetery.
