Biography contributed by Katherine Blakeley.

Mary Catherine Campbell was born on 20 March 1855 in Midlothian, Scotland – the daughter of Donald Campbell and Ann McKinnon.

She emigrated to Otago with her family in 1861 on the “Lady Egidia” and they settled at Lake Waipori on the Taieri Plains.

At the age of 27, on 25 November 1880 at Knox Church, Dunedin, Mary married 42 year old farmer David McPherson.

They had eight children, one who died in infancy, and when Mary signed the suffrage petition the family were living in Berwick.

David died in 1906 and Mary died on 16 October 1940 at her daughter’s home in Dunedin. They are buried in the family grave in the West Taieri Cemetery.
