Biography contributed by Katherine Blakeley

Mary Adams Cairney was born on 29 April 1872 in Glasgow – the daughter of Robert Cairney, a boiler maker, and Georgina Johnston.

She emigrated to Otago with her family in 1874 on the Oamaru and they settled at Ravensbourne, near Dunedin, where Mary signed the suffrage petition.

She married Edward Crichton Reid, an engineer, in 1895 – they had no children.

Edward died in 1946 and Mary died on 30 July 1957 – they are buried together in the Andersons Bay Cemetery.
