Marion Steel was born in December 1842 in Fenwick, Ayshire, Scotland – the daughter of George Steel, a railway labourer, and Janet Shedden.
Marion emigrated to Bluff in 1864 on the Sevilla and she married John Campbell on February 8th1865 in the Riverton parish.
They had five children, one who died in infancy, and lived for a time in Riverton before moving to Dunedin where John worked as a sexton.
When Marion signed the suffrage petition the family were living in Grosvenor St, South Dunedin.
Marion died at her daughter’s home in Port Chalmers on 7 September 1916 and John re-married in 1918 to Dorothea Henry, a widow with several children.
John died in 1927 – he is buried with Marion in the family grave in the Southern Cemetery.
