Biography contributed by Katherine Blakeley

Mary Herbert was born on 30 December 1859 in Currie, Edinburghshire, Scotland – the daughter of David Herbert, a farmer, and Jane Thomson.

She emigrated to New Zealand with her family in the 1860s and she married Neil Campbell, a merchant, on 18 October 1877 at her parents’ home at Swift Creek, Tapanui.

They had eight children and they ran a store at Hampden, north of Dunedin, where Mary signed the suffrage petition.

Her sister Margaret also signed in Hampden. (See 302 M Watt)

In the 1890s the family moved to Springburn near Ashburton to take up farming.

Neil died there in 1902 and Mary died at her son’s home at Raikaia on 9 November 1935, they are buried together in the Ashburton Cemetery.
