Biographical information provided by Briary Barry for the He Tohu exhibition:

Mary Ann Capill was born in 1858 to parents, John and Elizabeth Capill. She was known as Polly. She worked as a tweed darner in Kaiapoi so it’s likely that she worked at one of the Kaiapoi Woollen Mills. At some point Polly moved to Auckland as she died there in 1938, aged 80. The entry below her on this sheet of the Petition is S. Capill, her younger sister Selina (known as Lena) who is buried alongside her.
