Biography contributed by Katherine Blakeley
Margaret Allan Cunningham McRae was born on 15 March 1857 in Glasgow, Scotland – the daughter of Gabriel McRae, a linen draper’s assistant, and Margaret Allan.
Her parents appear to have separated as, in 1875, Margaret emigrated to Otago on the Aldergrove with her mother and two of her siblings.
She married Peter Alexander Clark, a railway guard, in 1878 in Dunedin and they had eight children, one who died in early childhood.
When Margaret signed the suffrage petition they were living in Nelson St, South Dunedin.
The family later lived in Greymouth and Oamaru before returning to Dunedin where Peter died in 1919 and Margaret died at her home on 6 July 1922.
They are buried in the family grave in the Southern Cemetery.
